Apostuj quajmë ata të cilët u zgjodhën prej Krishtit dhe u dërguan në gjithë botën për të predikuar Ungjillin.
Vetë fjalët e Krishtit të Ringjallur “Ashtu siç më dërgoi mua Ati, unë ju dërgoj juve” (Joan 20:21), i japin kuptim emërtimit të nxënëve të tij “Apostuj” (dmth. të dërguarit). Ata sjellin mesazhin e ri, mesazhin nga Qielli tek njerëzit në mbarë botën.
Emërtimin “Apostuj” ua dha nxënësve të tij, vetë Krishti, siç na tregon Ungjillori Luka: “Kur zbardhi dita i thirri nxënësit e vet dhe prej tyre zgjodhi dymbëdhjetë, të cilët dhe i quajti Apostuj …” (Luk. 6:13). Të barabartë me Apostujt, kremtohen për kontributin e tyre edhe Shën Pavli dhe Ungjillorët.
