On January 6, 1991, the first ceremony of the Sanctification of the Waters was held Albania after the Communism period. This service was held in Korça, in the Church of the Holy Trinity, by Fr. Kosta Kotnanin, a clergyman who suffered and was persecuted, together with his family by the communist regime. He was of a very great age and was wearing the garment that Cico’s sisters had sown for him some days before the feast. Simply, with the fire of faith, the first simple sermon was heard from the mouth of Mr. Sotir Bambulla. That day revealed clearly the thirst of people for faith, for the divine presence of God in their lives…
This day is remember every year in Korça, living today under different conditions, without fear and with the Church stronger than ever, the ceremony of Blessing of the Water is performed in a very beautiful manner. After the Divine Liturgy, the Metropolitan of Korça, His Grace John, celebrated the Service of Sanctification of the Waters. Later, at the fountain in the Vangjush Mio Square, in the presence of a large number of Orthodox believers, as well as people from other religions, the Cross was thrown into the water and was caught by a young person in spite of the crisp temperatures.
