Pak m\u00eb von\u00eb ai u b\u00eb igumeni i par\u00eb i Lavr\u00ebs s\u00eb famshme t\u00eb Shpellave t\u00eb Kievit, ku shk\u00eblqyen shenjtor\u00ebt Anthony, Theodosius dhe Nicon. Barlaami u rrit n\u00eb nj\u00eb sht\u00ebpi madh\u00ebshtore, i rrethuar nga pasuria, lavdia dhe nj\u00eb edukim i krishter\u00eb. Babai i Joaniit ishte i pari midis djemve t\u00eb princit t\u00eb Kievit. N\u00ebna e tij Maria vinte nga brezi i luft\u00ebtarit t\u00eb famsh\u00ebm Viciata dhe gjeneralit Ostromiros. I riu q\u00eb n\u00eb mosh\u00eb t\u00eb vog\u00ebl u shqua p\u00ebr bukurin\u00eb e trupit dhe past\u00ebrtin\u00eb e shpirtit. Ai zbriste shpesh n\u00eb shpellat e Kievit p\u00ebr t\u00eb d\u00ebgjuar tre pleqt\u00eb e ndritur. Ai u trondit ve\u00e7an\u00ebrisht nga fjala e Zotit se \u00ebsht\u00eb m\u00eb e leht\u00eb p\u00ebr nj\u00eb deve t\u00eb kaloj\u00eb n\u00ebp\u00ebr vrim\u00ebn e gjilp\u00ebr\u00ebs sesa p\u00ebr nj\u00eb njeri t\u00eb pasur t\u00eb hyj\u00eb n\u00eb Mbret\u00ebrin\u00eb e Per\u00ebndis\u00eb. K\u00ebshtu u pjekur tek ai vendimi p\u00ebr t\u00eb l\u00ebn\u00eb gjith\u00e7ka dhe p\u00ebr t\u00eb ndjekur Krishtin me ta. Nj\u00eb dit\u00eb Barlaami shkoi te Sh\u00ebn Antoni dhe shprehu d\u00ebshir\u00ebn e tij p\u00ebr t&#x27;u b\u00ebr\u00eb murg me ta. Plaku e bekoi q\u00ebllimin e tij, por e paralajm\u00ebroi p\u00ebr tundimet e sjella nga pasuria dhe lavdia e k\u00ebsaj bote. Ai i kujtoi th\u00ebnien se kushdo q\u00eb v\u00eb dor\u00ebn n\u00eb parmend\u00eb dhe shikon prapa, nuk \u00ebsht\u00eb i denj\u00eb p\u00ebr Mbret\u00ebrin\u00eb. I riu u kthye n\u00eb sht\u00ebpi me zemr\u00ebn e djegur nga dashuria p\u00ebr Zotin. T\u00eb nes\u00ebrmen la prind\u00ebrit dhe t\u00eb fejuar\u00ebn dhe u nis me kal\u00eb drejt shpell\u00ebs. Ai kishte veshur rroba t\u00eb shk\u00eblqyera luksoze dhe shoq\u00ebrohej nga nj\u00eb mori sh\u00ebrb\u00ebtor\u00eb mbi kuaj t\u00eb dekoruar. Kur baballar\u00ebt besnik\u00eb dol\u00ebn p\u00ebr ta pritur me p\u00ebrulje, ai iku dhe u p\u00ebrul n\u00eb sexhde para tyre. Ai hoqi rrobat e tij mbret\u00ebrore dhe i vuri n\u00eb k\u00ebmb\u00ebt e Sh\u00ebn Antonit. I paraqiti kuajt e dekoruar bashk\u00eb me t\u00eb mirat e kota t\u00eb bot\u00ebs dhe k\u00ebrkoi t\u00eb q\u00ebndronte p\u00ebrgjithmon\u00eb n\u00eb shpell\u00eb. Ai nuk donte m\u00eb t\u00eb kthehej n\u00eb vendlindje. Sh\u00ebn Antoni e paralajm\u00ebroi at\u00eb se engj\u00ebjt e Per\u00ebndis\u00eb po e pranonin n\u00eb m\u00ebnyr\u00eb t\u00eb padukshme premtimin e tij. Ai madje i tha t\u00eb mendonte se \u00e7far\u00eb do t\u00eb ndodhte n\u00ebse babai i tij vinte i armatosur dhe e merrte me forc\u00eb. Barlaami u p\u00ebrgjigj se edhe n\u00ebse do t\u00eb vuante tortura, ai nuk do t\u00eb kthehej n\u00eb jet\u00ebn e k\u00ebsaj bote. Ai k\u00ebrkoi q\u00eb sa m\u00eb par\u00eb t\u00eb ishte murg. Pastaj Sh\u00ebn Antoni e urdh\u00ebroi Sh\u00ebn Nikosin q\u00eb t\u00eb pres\u00eb flok\u00ebt dhe ta vesh\u00eb at\u00eb n\u00eb form\u00ebn monastike. Kur djali Joanii m\u00ebsoi se djali i tij i dashur ishte b\u00ebr\u00eb murg, ai u zem\u00ebrua tmerr\u00ebsisht kund\u00ebr besimtar\u00ebve. Ai mori nj\u00eb mori sh\u00ebrb\u00ebtor\u00eb, sulmoi shpell\u00ebn dhe i shp\u00ebrndau v\u00ebllez\u00ebrit. Ai hoqi shpejt rrobat e tij mbret\u00ebrore dhe shkeli n\u00eb balt\u00eb, duke shkelur me to marifetet e t\u00eb ligjve. N\u00eb sht\u00ebpi u detyrua t\u00eb ulej n\u00eb tavolin\u00eb me t\u00eb atin, por nuk preku asgj\u00eb nga ushqimet. Pas ngr\u00ebnies, babai i tij e mbylli n\u00eb dhom\u00ebn e tij me roje q\u00eb t\u00eb mos largohej. E urdh\u00ebroi t\u00eb fejuar\u00ebn t\u00eb vishte stolit\u00eb m\u00eb t\u00eb bukura dhe ta tundonte n\u00eb \u00e7do m\u00ebnyr\u00eb. Ajo shkoi tek ai dhe iu lut t\u00eb ulej n\u00eb shtrat me t\u00eb. I riu e kuptoi menj\u00ebher\u00eb se babai i tij e kishte d\u00ebrguar at\u00eb p\u00ebr ta joshur t\u00eb rr\u00ebzohej. Ai ngriti nj\u00eb lutje t\u00eb fsheht\u00eb nga thell\u00ebsia e zemr\u00ebs s\u00eb tij drejt Zotit t\u00eb Gjith\u00ebm\u00ebshirsh\u00ebm. Ai q\u00ebndroi tre dit\u00eb i panjollosur n\u00eb t\u00eb nj\u00ebjtin cep, pa ngr\u00ebn\u00eb, pa veshje, vet\u00ebm me nj\u00eb rrob\u00eb leshore. Besimtar\u00ebt n\u00eb shpell\u00eb vajtuan fatin e tij dhe u lut\u00ebn me zjarr p\u00ebr shp\u00ebtimin e tij. Per\u00ebndia d\u00ebgjoi lutjet e besimtar\u00ebve dhe e zbuti zemr\u00ebn e fort\u00eb t\u00eb atit t\u00eb Barlaamit. Kur sh\u00ebrb\u00ebtor\u00ebt raportuan se n\u00eb dit\u00ebn e kat\u00ebrt djali as nuk po hante as nuk ishte veshur, Joanii pati frik\u00eb se do t\u00eb vdiste nga uria dhe t\u00eb ftohtit. Ai e thirri pran\u00eb tij, e p\u00ebrqafoi me dashuri dhe e la t\u00eb lir\u00eb t\u00eb kthehej n\u00eb shpell\u00eb. Pastaj vajtime dhe klithma u d\u00ebgjuan n\u00eb t\u00eb gjith\u00eb rezidenc\u00ebn, sikur t\u00eb ishte nj\u00eb njeri i vdekur. Prind\u00ebrit vajtuan djalin, k\u00ebrkuesi vajtuan t\u00eb fejuar\u00ebn e saj, skllev\u00ebrit vajtonin zot\u00ebrin\u00eb e tyre t\u00eb mir\u00eb. Por Barlaami, si nj\u00eb zog i shp\u00ebtuar nga rrjeta, vrapoi i lumtur n\u00eb shpell\u00eb. V\u00ebllez\u00ebrit e prit\u00ebn me g\u00ebzim t\u00eb madh dhe lavd\u00ebruan Per\u00ebndin\u00eb q\u00eb e d\u00ebgjoi lutjen e tyre. Kur numri i v\u00ebllez\u00ebrve arriti n\u00eb dymb\u00ebdhjet\u00eb, Sh\u00ebn Antoni pa te Barlaami i ri frytet shpirt\u00ebrore t\u00eb nj\u00eb plaku dhe hirin e nj\u00eb udh\u00ebrr\u00ebfyesi t\u00eb v\u00ebrtet\u00eb. Ai u k\u00ebshillua me t\u00eb gjith\u00eb v\u00ebllez\u00ebrit dhe vendosi Barlaamin si abat n\u00eb vend t\u00eb tij, nd\u00ebrsa ai vet\u00eb u t\u00ebrhoq n\u00eb nj\u00eb kod\u00ebr tjet\u00ebr p\u00ebr t\u00eb qet\u00ebsuar. Sh\u00ebn Barlaami mori p\u00ebrsip\u00ebr kujdesin shpirt\u00ebror t\u00eb v\u00ebllez\u00ebrve dhe b\u00ebri nj\u00eb jet\u00eb edhe m\u00eb t\u00eb rrept\u00eb asketike. Kur numri i murgjve u shtua, shpella nuk mund t\u00eb strehonte m\u00eb t\u00eb gjith\u00eb gjat\u00eb tubimeve t\u00eb adhurimit. M\u00eb pas, me bekimin e Sh\u00ebn Antonit, ai nd\u00ebrtoi mbi shpell\u00eb nj\u00eb tempull t\u00eb vog\u00ebl prej druri kushtuar Fjetjes s\u00eb Hyjlind\u00ebs. Ata v\u00ebllez\u00ebr q\u00eb nuk mund t\u00eb futeshin brenda shpell\u00ebs mblidheshin aty p\u00ebr t\u00eb k\u00ebnduar. Ai themeloi nj\u00eb manastir pran\u00eb tempullit dhe vendosi shenjtorin Varlaam si abat atje si t\u00eb af\u00ebrmin e tij dhe nj\u00eb murg me p\u00ebrvoj\u00eb. N\u00eb manastirin e ri shenjtori mbajti rrept\u00ebsin\u00eb e gjendjes s\u00eb tij shpellore. Ai i m\u00ebsonte pand\u00ebrprer\u00eb v\u00ebllez\u00ebrit t\u00eb kujdeseshin me gjith\u00eb zell p\u00ebr shp\u00ebtimin e shpirtit. Ai i nxiti ata q\u00eb t\u00eb ken\u00eb gjithmon\u00eb nj\u00eb nd\u00ebrgjegje t\u00eb past\u00ebr p\u00ebrpara Per\u00ebndis\u00eb dhe njer\u00ebzve. P\u00ebrpjekjeve t\u00eb tij t\u00eb shumta, Barlaami i shenjt\u00eb shtoi m\u00eb von\u00eb hirin e pelegrinit t\u00eb vendeve t\u00eb shenjta. Ai u largua me nj\u00eb bekim dhe arriti n\u00eb qytetin e shenjt\u00eb t\u00eb Jeruzalemit, ku vizitoi t\u00eb gjitha pelegrinazhet e shenjta t\u00eb Palestin\u00ebs. Pas k\u00ebtij emigrimi t\u00eb bekuar, ai u kthye n\u00eb manastirin e tij dhe vazhdoi pun\u00ebn e tij baritore. Pas ca koh\u00ebsh ai nisi nj\u00eb udh\u00ebtim t\u00eb dyt\u00eb t\u00eb gjat\u00eb p\u00ebr n\u00eb Kostandinopoj\u00eb, qytetin mbret\u00ebror t\u00eb Ortodoksis\u00eb. Ai vizitoi t\u00eb gjitha manastiret e qytetit dhe bleu aq en\u00eb t\u00eb shenjta dhe libra sa i nevojitej v\u00ebllaz\u00ebris\u00eb s\u00eb tij. Megjithat\u00eb, gjat\u00eb rrug\u00ebs s\u00eb kthimit, ai u godit nga nj\u00eb s\u00ebmundje e r\u00ebnd\u00eb dhe nuk mundi t\u00eb vazhdonte. Mb\u00ebrriti me v\u00ebshtir\u00ebsi pran\u00eb qytetit t\u00eb Vladimirit dhe u vendos n\u00eb manastirin e quajtur Mali Athos. Atje ai ia dor\u00ebzoi n\u00eb m\u00ebnyr\u00eb paq\u00ebsore shpirtin Zotit, pasi la urdhrat e tij t\u00eb fundit. Ai iu lut sh\u00ebrb\u00ebtor\u00ebve t\u00eb tij q\u00eb t&#x27;i \u00e7onin eshtrat e tij n\u00eb Manastirin e Shpellave n\u00eb Kiev. Ai gjithashtu urdh\u00ebroi q\u00eb gjith\u00e7ka q\u00eb kishte bler\u00eb p\u00ebr nevojat e manastirit t&#x27;i jepej t\u00eb shenjt\u00eb Theodosius.
