Kur arriti nj\u00eb mosh\u00eb t\u00eb pjekur, ai la pas pallatet e qytetit dhe shkoi n\u00eb manastiret e Nikomedias. Atje, n\u00eb gjirin e Nikomedias, midis fshatrave Panteichio dhe Touzla, ishte manastiri i Pavlopetriou, kushtuar apostujve Pjet\u00ebr dhe Pal. N\u00eb k\u00ebt\u00eb manastir u b\u00eb murg dhe me zell e p\u00ebrul\u00ebsi filloi luft\u00ebn shpirt\u00ebrore. Jeta e tij asketike ishte aq e ashp\u00ebr dhe aq e ndritshme sa fama e tij shpejt shkoi p\u00ebrtej mureve t\u00eb manastirit. Ai arriti n\u00eb pallatet dhe vet\u00eb perandori m\u00ebsoi p\u00ebr virtytin e murgut t\u00eb p\u00ebrulur t\u00eb Nikomedias. N\u00eb vitet e v\u00ebshtira t\u00eb ikonoklasizmit, Osh\u00ebnar Athanasi u gjend pran\u00eb mbrojt\u00ebsve t\u00eb m\u00ebdhenj t\u00eb Ortodoksis\u00eb. Ai ishte i lidhur me nj\u00eb miq\u00ebsi t\u00eb ngusht\u00eb shpirt\u00ebrore me Theodor Studitin dhe me Joaniin, abatin e manastirit t\u00eb famsh\u00ebm t\u00eb Katar\u00ebve. Me to luftoi fort p\u00ebr nderimin e ikonave t\u00eb shenjta, n\u00eb koh\u00ebn kur rr\u00ebfimi k\u00ebrkonte gjak e sakrific\u00eb. Kur perandori ikonoklast Leo Isaurus hipi n\u00eb fron, persekutimi i murgjve ortodoks\u00eb u b\u00eb edhe m\u00eb i ashp\u00ebr dhe i pam\u00ebshirsh\u00ebm.
