Si i krishtere i virtytshem ai u dorezua prift ne Akuile. Atje ai e mbrojti me devotshmeri besen e vertete kunder cifuteve e paganeve. Kur filloi persekutimi i madh i Dioklecianit kunder te krishtereve (304), ai shkoi ne vendlindjen e tij, ne Dalmaci. Atje ai u terhoq ne nje mal te larte, ku filloi te bente nje jete asketike me lutje dhe agjerime. Jetoi ne ate mal me shume se nje vit. Perandori Dioklecian erdhi ne Iliri dhe shkoi pikerisht ne malin ku banonte shenjti, per t&#8217;u bere fli idhujve. Atehere e arrestuan Donatin e donin ta detyronin qe edhe ai t&#8217;u bente fli perendive pagane. Por shenjti dhe konfesori i Krishtit ju pergjigjej me trimeri qe ishte i krishtere dhe s&#8217;pranonte t&#8217;u bente fli demoneve. Me kaq force e bindje e mbrojti besen e Krishtit, saqe dy nga anetaret e shpur\u00ebs se perandorit u kthyen e u bene te krishtere. Keta ishin Makario dhe Theodhori. Mbas kercenimesh te shumta filluan t&#8217;i torturonin te tre. Por ata i perballuan me nje burreri te pazakonte. Perandori dha urdher qe t&#8217;u hidheshin bishave te egra. Por bishat, kur u ndodhen prane martireve te Krishtit u zbuten dhe bene si manare. Kjo mrekulli beri qe shume pagane te ktheheshin ne te krishtere. Paganet e tjere, te tembur nga kjo mrekulli i liruan. Nje termet i madh ndodhi, dhe ata moren urdher nga qielli te shkonin ne Thmuis te Egjiptit. Ne qytetin e Thmuisit sapo kishte vdekur si martir peshkopi i qytetit, shen Fileas (4 shkurt). Te krishteret ishin mbledhur per te zgjedhur zevendesin e tij. Kur Donati hyri ne kishen e qytetit, nje pellumb ndaloi mbi koken e tij. Te gjithe kuptuan qe kjo ishte nje shenje nga qielli. Keshtu qe, njezeri, e zgjodhen peshkop te qytetit. Menjehere pas kesaj ai dorezoi Makarion prift e Theodhorin dhiakon. Ne punen e tij si drejtues i kishes se Thmuisit, Donati u dallua si nje bari i vertete. Sebashku me dy shoket e tij ai perhapte pa u lodhur dhe pa pushuar Lajmin e Mire te Mbreterise se Perendise. Fama e tyre u perhap ne tere Egjiptin. Gjate kohes se persekutimit te Licinit ata u arrestuan dhe mbasi i torturuan, jua prene trupat copa-copa dhe i hodhen ne det.
