OFFICIAL STATEMENT ABOUT THE DRAMA “ST. MARY OF BERAT” OF MR. NAMIK DOKLE

We have been closely following the indignation of the Orthodox believers of Korça, and we convey also our concern about the drama “St. Mary of Berat.” For the Orthodox community this is derogatory and insulting, because when is denigrated the honored Orthodox clergy, is denigrated the entire community.

The Religious Communities in Albania have suffered insults, discrimination and persecution from the atheistic regime of the past century. So we’re concerned that this treatment continues in the same way today.

Has time now that the orthodox faith is being attacked everywhere in different ways. Such actions promote the reaction of every believer, as well as affecting the maintenance of the religious harmony and coexistence, as a value that characterizes our society. At the time when we try to build bridges of cooperation and understanding, the insulting propaganda divides and gives rise to suspicion and mistrust.

Through this statement, we protest against these phenomena and address citizens’ opinions of Korça and beyond, that such actions affecting the various religious communities, intentional or not, do not serve the interests of the city, for the religious coexistence and progress of the Albanian society.

We see this protest also as a moral obligation to our ancestors, that with many sacrifices kept intact for centuries the Orthodox faith and moral. And furthermore the Orthodox Church is one of the soundest parts of our society, with a major contribution to the preservation of human values and in helping all people in need.
