Solemn Celebration of the Dormition Feast of Holy Theotokos.
On August 15, the Orthodox faithful celebrate the Dormition of Virgin Mary, which is a feast that is preceded by two weeks of fasting. This celebration which is known also as “The Assumption”, commemorates the dormition, the resurrection and the glorification of the Mother of God. The most Holy Theotokos was taken up to Heaven by her Son and our God to experience the resurrection of Her mortal body coming into reunion with her soul. The Orthodox Church teaches us that Holy Theotokos had no personal sins. However, in the Gospel of the respective feast, in the liturgical services and in the icon of the Dormition event, the Church proclaims that Virgin Mary really needed to be saved by Christ, just as all people are saved from their torments, sufferings and death of this world; and after she died, she was resurrected by her Son as the Mother of Life, and now partakes of the eternal life of Heaven, which has been prepared and promised to all who “hear the word of God and keep it ” (Luke 11:27-28).
On August 15, 2022, the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos was celebrated throughout the country, in the churches of the Archdiocese and the Metropolises. This is one of the most heartfelt church events which is historically celebrated. A large number of churches and monasteries in our country but also throughout the Orthodox world are dedicated to this event.
During this celebration, these places become pilgrimage sites for prayer and other activities. In Tirana, in the “Resurrection of Christ” Cathedral, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archbishop Anastas and His Grace Nathanail, the Metropolitan of Amantia and clergy of the Archiepiscopate. Archdeacon Spiro Topanxha read the sermon by Archbishop Anastasios on this occasion which is a celebration that brings festivity and joy everywhere.
